Soul Split

Lanthanum Studios

Soul Split is a PSX styled action rogue-lite dungeon crawler following an amnesiac sorcerer who’s previous actions broke the cycle of life and death. Conscripted into the service of Death itself, you’ll delve into a vast dungeon overflowing with magic and monsters to “clean up your mess.”

I worked as the audio lead for everything sound related on this project. I composed all of the music, created all of the sound effects and other sound assets, as well as worked as an audio programmer to implement all of the sound into the game.

Sound implementation was an interesting task as I had yet to do a roguelike with procedural generation. This affected the audio production in many ways, where I had to program and design systems both in C# scripts in Unity and the Wwise Project that complimented the design of the game.

Below is a little demo reel of the game and the sound design I’ve done for it.

The artistic decision to give the game a PS1, early 2000s graphic style helped guide my sound creation process, as I used effects and techniques from that era of gaming. I wanted to make music that was super enjoyable to listen to on loops, and sound effects that were quick, memory saving, and had that certain crushed nature that early 2000s games used to save memory space on new compact discs.

The Tunes

Here are some snippets of the OST, also composed by myself. The music was so much fun to make because I got to make music that reminded me a little of old PS1 games, but also had a glimpse of the future. I wanted to have each track evolve as it went until the boss encounter at each dungeon. Each song also had a fun B-Side, an alternate mix, for when your Soul comes back to haunt you…
